Vibration measurement is an essential physical factor measurement carried out within the scope of occupational hygiene to determine mechanical vibration levels transmitted to workers’ bodies (hand-arm vibration and whole-body vibration) and evaluate risks to health. Powered hand tools, vibrating machinery, heavy construction equipment, and industrial vehicles used in production and construction can transmit intense vibration. Long-term exposure to mechanical vibration causes vascular, neurological, and musculoskeletal disorders.
Enterprises deploying vibrating tools or mobile equipment must regularly measure vibration levels, calculate daily exposure values, and take necessary technical and organizational measures.
WHAT IS VIBRATION MEASUREMENT?
Vibration measurement is the process of measuring frequency-weighted acceleration levels (m/s²) along three orthogonal axes (x, y, z) using triaxial accelerometers and human vibration meters. As a result of measurements, daily 8-hour equivalent exposure values [A(8)] for hand-arm and whole-body vibration are calculated.
Vibration measurements are evaluated under two main categories: Hand-Arm Vibration transmitted through hands and arms from vibrating tools, and Whole-Body Vibration transmitted through seats or floors of mobile machinery.
WHY IS VIBRATION MEASUREMENT IMPORTANT?
Long-term exposure to hand-arm vibration can cause White Finger syndrome, loss of grip strength, and sensory nerve damage. Whole-body vibration can lead to chronic lower back disorders, spinal damage, and circulatory problems. Regular measurements prevent these occupational diseases.
Thanks to vibration measurements:
- Vibration levels emitted by power tools and machinery are determined
- Workers’ daily 8-hour equivalent exposure values A(8) are calculated
- Compliance with exposure action and limit values is checked
- Vibrating tools requiring maintenance or replacement are identified
- Safe working durations, worker rotation schedules, and ergonomic solutions are planned
In conclusion, regular vibration measurements protect workers from permanent musculoskeletal and vascular disorders while ensuring statutory compliance.
VIBRATION MEASUREMENT PARAMETERS
The main vibration measurement parameters we carry out as Haliç Occupational Hygiene Laboratory are as follows:
Hand-Arm Vibration Measurements
- Hand-arm vibration acceleration (ahv) measurement
- Daily equivalent exposure value A(8) calculation
- Hand-held power tool (grinder, drill, pneumatic hammer) vibration evaluation
Whole-Body Vibration Measurements
- Whole-body vibration acceleration (aw) measurement along x, y, z axes
- Daily equivalent exposure value A(8) calculation
- Forklift, crane, truck, heavy equipment, and vibrating platform vibration evaluation
HOW IS VIBRATION MEASUREMENT PERFORMED?
Vibration measurement is performed following a systematic process in accordance with occupational health and safety standards:
- Vibrating tools, machinery, operational tasks, and operator exposure times are identified
- Appropriate triaxial accelerometers and mounting adapters are selected
- Accelerometers are securely attached to the tool handle or operator seat
- Triaxial acceleration readings are recorded during actual operational tasks
- Daily exposure durations are integrated to calculate normalized A(8) values
- Calculated values are compared against statutory action and limit values and reported
Measurements must be recorded during representative working cycles and actual operating conditions of the equipment.
What are the statutory vibration exposure action and limit values?
Pursuant to the Regulation on Protection of Employees from Vibration-Related Risks: For Hand-Arm Vibration, daily exposure action value is 2.5 m/s² and daily exposure limit value is 5.0 m/s². For Whole-Body Vibration, daily exposure action value is 0.5 m/s² and daily exposure limit value is 1.15 m/s².
Which equipment causes the highest vibration risks?
High hand-arm vibration is generated by angle grinders, pneumatic chipping hammers, impact wrenches, chainsaws, and concrete vibrators. High whole-body vibration is generated by forklifts, haul trucks, excavators, tractors, and vibrating screens.
How often should vibration measurements be repeated?
- Periodically in accordance with risk assessment schedules
- When new power tools, machinery, or industrial vehicles are acquired
- When tools undergo major mechanical repair or overhaul
- When workers report numbness, tingling, or joint pain in hands or back
- During official inspections
VIBRATION MEASUREMENT AND TECHNICAL REPORTING
Haliç Occupational Hygiene Laboratory conducts hand-arm and whole-body vibration measurements using calibrated triaxial instruments, delivering comprehensive technical compliance reports evaluating exposure levels against statutory limit values.
In conclusion, enterprises obtain actionable data to implement vibration reduction measures, design rotation schedules, and protect employee health.
