Lighting Measurement

Lighting measurement is an occupational hygiene measurement conducted to evaluate lighting levels in work areas in terms of worker health, visual comfort, and workplace safety. Inadequate or improper lighting can cause eye fatigue, loss of concentration, decreased work efficiency, and occupational accidents. On the other hand, excessively bright light or glare can also adversely affect working conditions.
Enterprises must regularly measure lighting levels, evaluate whether lighting in working areas meets standards, and plan necessary improvements.

WHAT IS LIGHTING MEASUREMENT?

Lighting measurement is the process of measuring the luminous flux per unit area (illuminance in lux) at working surfaces and circulation zones using calibrated luxmeters. As a result of measurement, average illumination levels, uniformity of lighting, and visual comfort conditions across the work area are determined.
Lighting measurement is performed taking into account the height of the working surface, task difficulty, day/night shift differences, and artificial/natural lighting sources.

WHY IS LIGHTING MEASUREMENT IMPORTANT?

Adequate and balanced lighting is essential for preventing occupational accidents, preserving eye health, and optimizing work performance. Regular lighting measurements support statutory compliance and quality working conditions.
Thanks to lighting measurements:
  • Illumination levels across working areas are determined
  • Whether required lux levels are met according to the type of work is checked
  • Lighting deficiencies, shadows, and glare issues are identified
  • Occupational accidents and eye fatigue are prevented
  • Energy efficiency and lighting improvement projects are guided
In conclusion, regularly conducted lighting measurements contribute to the establishment of an ergonomically healthy and safe working environment.

LIGHTING MEASUREMENT PARAMETERS

The main lighting measurement parameters we perform as Haliç Occupational Hygiene Laboratory are as follows:
  • Work surface illumination level (Lux) measurement
  • General workplace ambient lighting measurement
  • Circulation pathways and emergency exit lighting measurement
  • Daylight and artificial lighting combination evaluation
  • Lighting uniformity ratio calculation
  • Night shift lighting measurement

HOW IS LIGHTING MEASUREMENT PERFORMED?

Lighting measurement is performed following a systematic process in accordance with occupational health and safety standards:
  1. Work areas, visual tasks, and working planes are identified
  2. Measurement grid and measurement points are planned
  3. Measurements are recorded at working heights using calibrated luxmeters
  4. Measurements are taken without casting shadows on the sensor
  5. Night measurements are performed separately where shift work takes place
  6. Average lux values and uniformity ratios are compared against standards and reported
Measurements must be conducted at the actual working plane where the task is performed and without interference from the surveyor’s body shadow.

What are the minimum required lighting levels in workplaces?
Minimum illumination levels depend on task precision: Corridors and warehouses generally require 100 lux; coarse manufacturing and assembly 200-300 lux; office work and fine assembly 500 lux; precision work and inspection 750-1000 lux.
Should lighting measurements be taken during day or night?
If the workplace operates only during daytime, measurements are taken during daylight hours. If night shifts are worked, measurements must also be taken after dark to assess artificial lighting adequacy.
When should lighting measurements be renewed?
  • Periodically in accordance with risk assessment schedules
  • When lighting fixtures or workplace layout changes
  • When new work areas or machinery are introduced
  • When employees complain of eye fatigue or visual difficulties
  • During official inspections

LIGHTING MEASUREMENT AND TECHNICAL REPORTING

Haliç Occupational Hygiene Laboratory conducts workplace lighting measurements using calibrated luxmeters, providing detailed technical reports evaluating illumination levels and uniformity against national and international standards.
In conclusion, enterprises obtain measurable data to improve lighting ergonomics, ensure regulatory compliance, and safeguard visual comfort.
